4. MARKETING ACTIVITIES IN KARIMNAGAR DISTRICT

In Karimnagar, the village organizations of women SHGs were highly participating in purchasing paddy, on behalf of the Government to give support price to the farmers.

Earlier, at the time of cropping season i.e., Khariff and Rabi, the limited no. of traders used to form ring and try to lower the prices so that the farmer is not getting the support price. The Civil Supplies Department is having little staff to overcome this as huge arrivals will be there at the time of season.

To overcome this and to provide support price to the farmers, the Government decided to utilize the services of Indira Kranthi Patham Village Organizations (Women SHG Organizations) as they were well established. This was piloted in Karimnagar District and Karimnagar stood first in the state every year.

To carry out this, the Civil Supplies Department will enter into an agreement with Zilla Samakhya which is the apex body of SHGs in the District, to purchase paddy from the farmers on behalf of the department at minimum support price with FAQ quality. For this the VOs will be paid some service charge i.e., 2.5% on turnover.

The village organization open mini marketing centers in the villages and give schedule to farmers village wise. They purchase the commodity in villages with FAQ quality at MSP. This avoided the middle men (Traders) system and helped the farmers a lot in getting support prices in the villages. Every year around 200 to 250 IKP purchasing centers will be opened and purchases paddy / maize to the tune of 400 to 500 crores in the district. This activity directly benefit to the farmers to the tune of 50 crores every years otherwise it goes to traders. This provides and income of around 8 to 12 crores every year to village organizations. There are many more advantages as mentioned below.

ADVANTAGES:
  1. The farmers are above to get minimum support price for Maize and Paddy at Village level itself.
  2. The Marketing interventions by the VO / MS has addressed the Village Level imperfections like unfair trade practices, Malpractice of the Middle men and traders are controlled / eliminated.
  3. Reduce expenditure in respect of Storage & Transportation.
  4. It is estimated to benefit the farmers nearly to an extent of Rs.50 crores.
  5. Income generation in Non-wage days.
  6. Seasonal employment generation in the marketing centers.

Village Grain Bank:

It is the Government of India scheme. The Government of India has communicated the Village  Grain Bank scheme, according to which, various food based and employment generating schemes have made significant improvement in the food security situation of the country, yet access to food remains a problem in some chronically food scarce areas like drought prone areas hot & cold deserts and safeguard against starvation during the period of natural calamity or during the lean season when the marginalized food insecure households do not have sufficient resources to purchase the rations. Such people in need of food grains will be able to borrow food grains from Village Grain Banks set up with in the village.
